Simplifying your home includes having enough storage space for your belongings. Itâs okay to make room for the things that you need. Doors on cabinets and cupboards tremendously help to create calm qi and less visual clutter.
Even your ordinary bric-a-brac can bring space for play, joy, and contemplation.
letting go practice
In life, in our homes, and within our hearts, it can be so hard to let go of things with which we have surrounded ourselves. This can be people, things, or places. And this seems to be the case regardless of whether they are helpful and beneficial, or if they hurt us or hold us back. Itâs perfectly human to try to solidify, become fixated, and seek stability.
Making space is not about letting go of the things we love; rather itâs a practice of allowing our hearts to acknowledge impermanence and attachment. When you give, you receive. When you receive, you give. And if we take it a step further, there is a Zen adage âthere is no giver, there is no receiver.â I found this Buddhist awareness practice incredibly subtle yet powerful in exploring how to let go.
Here are the steps:
⢠Pick up any personal object nearby
⢠Hold it in one hand, feel the weight of it, and be curious about it
⢠Now allow the hand to offer it to your other hand
⢠Notice anything that comes up when you shift the object to the other hand
⢠Spend time moving the object back and forth between hands
If youâd like to take this practice even further, see if there is a slightly meaningful object in your home that you can give away. When I took my bodhisattva vow, I was asked to give away a precious object as a gift to the teacher. Essentially, a bodhisattva is a compassionate human being that has vowed to offer their assistance toward the enlightenment of all sentient beings. I found the vow, and the gift giving, quite meaningful and encourage you to try out and examine this process. See what comes up for you personally. These very simple practices can begin to open up new pathways and allow a safe space to give and receive.
See how you can begin to let go.
